Our Story | Latigo Coffee
The Coffee for Excellent Times
Latigo Coffee is a subscription-based coffee delivery service of the finest quality beans. We understand the challenge of discovering memorable coffees - far too often, it results in a totally random "shot in the dark" at your local Cafe de Snobbery for something you could easily not be stoked on. And as for those highfalutin tasting notes? Come on...
We focus first and foremost on quality. Are we proud of the coffees being shipped this month? Would we want to share this particular bag with our friends? Is there something new and unique in this cup of coffee that's different from the last? If the answer to any of these questions is "no," then we start over. Life is too short to drink mediocre coffee.
Advocates for the Outdoor Life
You may have noticed that we like to spend time outside. Outside is neat. We really enjoy traveling to new places, pitching a tent, and brewing coffee with a big beautiful sky overhead. It's quite fun that way - and while we love all of our customers equally, we kinda really love those who dig themselves deep into the woods and jam out with an Aeropress. We just can't get enough of it.
Scientific fact: coffee tastes better outside. We read this a few months ago in a highly-respected scientific journal. Something to do with endorphins - and photosynthesis. If only we paid better attention during science class... oh and if you can track down this particular article, please send us an email our Department of Coffee Knowledge and maybe we'll send you something nice.
But yes - we want you to grab some beans, get outside and get after it. Customers who share their "backcountry barista" shots with the hashtag #latigocoffee will receive very special ju-ju vibes (and occasional rewards) from us.
A Brief History
Once upon a time in the year twenty twelve, a young American quit his perfectly decent desk job at a technology start-up to try something different. He was sick of staring at computers and answering phone calls all day. He started taking extended "lunch breaks" to go explore the various coffee shops around Los Angeles. He didn't know exactly why, but he couldn't escape the gravitational pull of beanjuice.
And then one day he met some coffee farmers in Santa Barbara. Those coffee farmers introduced him to some other coffee farmers in Hawaii, and those coffee farmers offered him a chance to come live on the Big Island to work (and learn) at their farm. So he broke the chains of his desk jockey life and ventured out into an uncertain jungle of coffee knowledge.
Now, these coffee farmers happen to be sorta famous now and they also happen to produce some of the highest-reviewed coffees by certain renowned online coffee publications. Which is just lovely - because they work their asses off and certainly deserve the success.
Flash forward five years: after several years of traveling the world in search of the finest coffee experiences, our fearless protagonist had a flash of genius during a fateful bicycle tour of the California coast. The idea was to create a weird little coffee roasting company that celebrates our collective love for this big beautiful planet - while making it easier for coffee drinkers everywhere to discover new stuff in the cup. Say hello to Latigo.
Somewhere north of Pepperdine University and south of Ventura County Line is a very special place called Latigo. For us, it's been a state of mind for many years - and one of those places you discover when first moving to a new place that makes everything OK.
On the beach-side of Pacific Coast Highway is Latigo Shore. On the non-beach side of Pacific Coast Highway is the windy canyon road. Both are epic, spiritual places full of nonstop fun for early-risers and adventure-seekers. We love this place and always will - hence our kinda tricky-to-pronounce name.
Side-note: it might also have something to do with horses (or lassos) in either this language or in Spanish. If you have the definitive answer, please do contact our Department of Coffee Knowledge. Thank you.
